Thousands of Hop-pickers used to travel to Tonbridge and the surrounding
area to spend the season between August and September gathering hops on
local farms.
For their use, special roadside shacks adjoining the pubs served drinks
with tankards fixed by chains to stop the thefts of the drinking pots.
