An afternoon treat for Senior Citizens

Do you have an elderly friend, neighbour or relative who lives alone? Do you think they deserve a treat?

Tonbridge Lions Club is once again arranging an afternoon of entertainment on the 22 February 2014 for Senior Citizens who live locally and alone. There will also be light refreshments served and The Lions Club will arrange and provide transport to and from the event.

To qualify for an invitation the person must be a senior citizen and live alone in Tonbridge, Hildenborough or Hadlow.

Application forms are available from the Age UK office in Bradford Street, Tonbridge and must be completed and sent to the return address before 31st Dec 2013.

Forms can also be downloaded from the “Future Events” page of the Tonbridge Lions website (www.tonbridgelions.co.uk). If the number of applications exceed the capacity of the venue then lots will be drawn. All successful applications will result in an invitation being delivered personally by a member of Tonbridge Lions Club.

Two more photos by Peter Ellis taken yesterday as pontoons are floated towards The Scout Hut. Here they have passed under the bridge and are behind the new Bradford Street apartment.

The image below is just before negotiating the bridge.

Suspended in the air

While walking along Bradford Street I couldn't take my eyes off the enormous amount of concrete suspended by this crane. I've seen this before, so it's obviously nothing unusual, but does anyone know why cranes are left overnight with concrete blocks hanging in the air. I find it fairly scarey to be truthful, but there has to be a reason for it. Could it be to stabilise the crane or balance it in some way? Can anyone enlighten me on the subject?

Remembrance Sunday in Tonbridge

Tonbridge Memorial Gardens

This year the Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday commemorations coincide on November 11.

There will be one public gathering in the Tonbridge Memorial Gardens, Bradford Street. Those attending are requested to be in the Memorial Garden by 10.50am at the latest to enable the Band, Ceremonial and Civic Party to process at 10.55am.

The substantive Service and Wreath laying will immediately follow the firing of the Maroons at 11am and 11.02am, and will be slightly longer than normal concluding at approximately 11.35am.

The Parade will then form up and follow its normal route past the Town Memorial at the Watergate and dismiss at Tonbridge Castle.

Do we know the river that runs through our town?
What spot is this?

There were a number of guesses on this one but no correct answers.  The photo was taken from the Sea Scouts hut close to The Teen and Twenty.  The building in the distance is the Job Centre on Bradford Street, and behind the trees on the opposite river bank is the skate park and tennis courts.

Tonbridge Daily Snippet

The Riverside Cafe owned by Phil Mandel, a roller skating rink with the reputation of being the best in West Kent, the ever busy Dousts Boathouse, The Star Cinema and The Medway Hall that was used for exhibitions and meetings during the day, and by night was transformed into a dance hall made Bradford Street the centre of Tonbridge entertainment at the turn of the 20th century.

It's hard to believe as Bradford Street is now simply an insignificant jumble of carparks and offices.

Please - do we have to put up with an oversized Lionel Blair in Bradford Street for the foreseeable future.
