The centre of Tonbridge entertainment

Bradford Street was once the centre of Tonbridge entertainment.

At the turn of the 20th Century the venues that gave this street its reputation
were:-

The Riverside Cafe owned by Phil Mandel
A roller skating rink known as the best in West Kent
Dousts Boathouse offering trips and picnics on the River Medway
The Star Cinema
and finally
The Medway Hall used for exhibitions and meeting during the day, and by night was transformed into a dance hall

  1. My maternal grandparents met at the Rink. Used to love going there when it was a furniture store. A cousin held her wedding reception at the Riverside Café. Loved the boats and spent many evenings dancing at the Medway Hall!!
