Recognising Tonbridge (not) Recognised

Recognising Tonbridge Feature

This has to be a first - a Recognising Tonbridge NOT Recognised.  I did give clues to look out for on Tonbridge Taster Day, but I'm sure you were all too busy looking down onto the Medway at the Dragon Boat races, rather than looking at what was above you at the time, or you would have recognised the wrought iron entrance gates at the castle Watergate.

Recognising Tonbridge

This is a beautiful spot in the town but where in Tonbridge am I standing today?

Does anyone recognise where this spot is located in the town?

Recognising Tonbridge Recognised

Recognising Tonbridge feature
Former Wesleyan Mission Chapel

There were a few recognitions of the Recognising Tonbridge feature and the stone inscribed with the words 'Infant School'. It is high on one of the apexes of the former Wesleyan Mission Chapel and school situated on the corner of Danvers Road and Barden Road.  The former Methodist school and sunday school was built in 1869.

Dave Morvan also recognised the building via Twitter.

Recognising Tonbridge Feature

Within minutes of posting the first person to recognise the feature, as the top of the tower at the rear of the fire station, was Andrea Turner. Steve Abrahams and Peter Harris also knew the answer.

Recognising Tonbridge Recognised

Kent Invicta Horse

Lots of you recognised this one and so there are too many of you to name.  It is of course the White Horse of Kent or Kent Invicta Horse on both the Big and Little Bridge.  At my last count there were 26 on the Big Bridge and 8 on Little Bridge.

Big Bridge Tonbridge

If you look closely above the Invicta Horse, the makers of the ironwork can be read. Gray Brothers were the Tonbridge company who made the intricate and beautiful railings in their Avebury Avenue foundry in 1887.  The site of the former workshop was approximately where the Adult Education building now stands.  I wonder what remnants are left below the building.

Next time you cross either of the bridges stop to look at the railings as often we are so used to our surroundings we simply don't notice how stunning they are, and the added bonus is that they were made in Tonbridge by Tonbridge men.

Recognising Tonbridge

I'm looking down and this can be found on two places in Tonbridge. What is it and where am I?

Recognising Tonbridge

This week's image should be far easier to recognise than the last Recognising Tonbridge post.  So, where in the town am I standing today?
