Relieved to live in Tonbridge

I didn't ever think I would write a blog post on our public conveniences in Tonbridge, but you have Steve who runs Tonbridge Farmers Market to thank for the inspiration. Not only is Steve an astute business man, but he also knows a thing or two about spending a penny in our lovely Kentish towns, and apparently Tonbridge has their fair share of public loos to pop into when one is caught short - so to speak!!! In fact he describes our plentiful and accessible toilets as one of Tonbridge's best assets together with the Castle and the river.

According to a recent report of the British Toilet Association, (yes this association really does exist), the number of public toilets in the UK has fallen by 40% in the past ten years. This is due to cost-cutting measures by local councils, and currently there is no legal requirement in place for councils to provide public loos. I suppose we should be grateful that TMBC haven't closed any of our facilities yet, and inconvenienced us Tonbridge folk when we feel that urgent need to go from time to time.

The Ridgeway loos

Take The Ridgeway loos for example, they have been available for about 50 years or more and have been a welcomed convenience to many children, who have been cut short on their way to and from school. Now refurbished they continue to provide service and relief to the community, and long may they continue.

Tonbridge Park Public Toilets

If us Tonbridge people are out in the fresh air and in the open spaces of the beautiful sportground and feel the call of nature, there really is no need to worry, as not only is there one public place to relieve onself,  but a second inside the swimming pool complex. We should really count ourselves very lucky, especially as we have a real 5* public loo placed in probably one of the most picturesque places in town ... in the shadow of our beautiful castle. What more could one desire.

So you lovely local folk ... we should all thank our lucky stars to have such conveniences in our town and be relieved to live in Tonbridge.

  1. Priory Road public toilets used to be 24 hour. Sadly this is not the case any longer. What am I supposed to do at 4 in the morning if I am out and about and need to 'release an otter into the wild'?
