In 1887 a fire broke out a Knole House in Sevenoaks. Tonbridge Fire Brigade were summoned by telegram to the scene, but as they had no horses available to pull the steam pump, the captain in desperation stopped a funeral and took the horses from the hearse and two mourners coaches.
