Recently Tonbridge Daily posted the snippet that in 1923 the Sportsground had the enormous number of 57 tennis courts. Many of you contacted me in disbelief that Tonbridge had so many. I think you were doubting me. I have since found this map of 1923 in a town guide that marks the tennis courts, and I may be mistaken but I think the number has risen even higher to 61. Take a look!!!!
When I attended the Technical High School in the late 1950's (now the Adult Education centre and Library)we would walk to the tennis courts by the bowling green(5)or the Angel tennis club(13)to use their courts.
ReplyDeleteThe bowling green courts were used to play Netball in the winter or the Sea Scouts hut at River Walk if it was raining.
By the time we had put our gym dresses and coats on, walked to the hut, hung up our wet coats and changed our shoes, we had about 15mins of netball before we had to make our way back to school.
In the summer 30 young ladies in tennis frocks crossing the High Street was quite a spectacle and drew a fair amount of wolf whistles!!
