Tonbridge Daily Snippet

A second theory on how the name of our town evolved is that the Saxon word Tun signifies a settlement, or an enclosed area, and burig means a fort.  Historically there are strong indications that the origins of the town was Saxon, and it was usual at this time for the Saxons to build a forts on a hill, in a valley and close to a river.

Tun-burig the town with a fort????  It is possible but again another theory.
