Tonbridge Daily Snippet

The Woodland Walk in north Tonbridge was created as a work scheme for the unemployed of the town in 1933

  1. When my family and I moved into our new house on the Cage Green Estate 1951/52?, Woodlands Walk was situated between the Hop Garden and Higham Wood. It was a lovely stroll through to Shipbourne Road, and in the Spring the wood was covered in an abundance of Bluebells and Primroses, thousands and thousands of them. Sadly they all disappeared when the trees were felled and the roots blasted out of the ground, in preparation for the building of Higham Lane Estate. I think the blasting lasted about three weeks.

    1. Hi I lived on Higham Wood Estate from 9 Months old. I have tried to find out more about the wood. As a child the wood was still filled with bluebells and other wild flowers. Our garden backed onto the wood and we had a little gate that went into it. I spent many happy hours playing there and of course jumping the stream which I have now discovered had a name "Penn Stream" I also recall the hop gardens before the estate was build. Happy memories. I went for a visit the week before last and was pleased to see it was still used although it has "grown up" during the last 44 years. Lots of changes especially to where the steam roller and swings were.
