Tonbridge Daily Snippet

It is not completely clear how the name of our town became Tonbridge and there are a number of theories, all of which have their flaws.  One of these theories that A.H.Neve was known to have discussed is that DUN was the Saxon word used for a mound or a hill fort, which later shifted to DON. Thereafter and  over time DON became TONE, which eventually became TON or TUN.  Add to that the bridge over the Medway which led to the Dun (mound or hill fort ) and the name changed from Dun/Don/Tone toTun/Ton-Bridge.

This theory is interesting and does carry some historical evidence, but is not completely flawless, so therefore remains a theory.

More theories to come.
