Is the Good Companions Club one of Tonbridge’s best kept secrets?
A
club for the seniors of Tonbridge, and the surrounding area, is anxious
to find and enrol 30 new members. Founded 25 years ago, the Club holds
monthly social evenings in the Royal British Legion Hall in Priory Road,
Tonbridge.
In past times membership reached a maximum of 100,
but in recent years numbers have slowly dwindled, and numbers are now
down to 70.
For a modest annual subscription of £14, plus £6 for
transport if required, on the first Monday of every month (except
January when there is a post-Christmas lunch), members enjoy regular
meetings with a wide variety of entertainment, bingo, a raffle and the
opportunity to meet and talk, in a relaxed atmosphere, to other friends,
old and new.
Some of the members are lonely, maybe housebound
and, except at the meetings, may lack opportunities to meet others in a
truly relaxed environment. For many, undoubtedly, Good Companions adds a
lot to the quality of life.
The Club and their members are
heavily subsidised as a result of community funds, other grants, and
legacies. For the convenience of members, door to door safe transport
can be arranged. The (unpaid) members of a small committee manage the
Club, and ensure members are looked after during social evenings.
Good
Companions says it all. Interested in joining? Without commitment, why
not come along and enjoy one of the social evenings?
To arrange an invitation to a social evening, and transport if necessary, ring Jan Powis, the Chairman, on (01732) 355676.
